The Cundiboyacense high plateau is one of the most important natural and mineral riches of Colombia, in this area there are mountains that keep inside amazing treasures, such as our Colombian emeralds. You can find along this región the famous mines of Muzo, Peñas Blancas, Chivor, Coscuez and La Pita.
The Emerald Museum highlights the work in these wonderful mines with replicas, photos, videos and exhibition of tools used by miners. At here, visitors will be able to get to know the mining universe of the country.
Muiscas were a native group that inhabited the Cundiboyacense highlands from 600 A.D., belonging to the Chibcha linguistic family from Central America.
According to rumors at that time, all the circumciser people knew that Muiscas performed a ceremony in the Guatavita lagoon where they elected a new Zipa. This room is intended to highlight this ceremony performed by Muisca society, before the Iberian conquest, and from this point, that El Dorado was not a myth or a legend, but one of the most important ceremonial acts of the pre-Columbian history.
In this exhibition also are found pre-Columbian and ancient pieces as the Man of Hudson an the Malgana.
PETRA is the largest vein of emeralds ever found in Colombia, with more than 60 crystals embedded. A true miracle that rests in our Emerald Museum!
This large emerald matrix was extracted from Polveros mine, in the mining area of Muzo, Boyacá.
Petra has a total weight of 236 pounds and its measurements are: 28 inches long and 21 inches wide. The only one with its characteristics in the country.
This room also has a collection of rare emerald specimens from the most important mines in the world, and the replica of a vertical tunnel, typical of the mining area of Colombia.
The Díaz brothers have designed this environment in which your 5 senses will immerse you in the experience of going through a tunnel in the Boyacá mountains, where the world’s best emeralds are found.
The sounds you will hear in your tour were recorded in a real mining tunnel, and the veins you will see, are replicas of a tunnel in the Muzo Emerald District.
An experience designed for you to understand the exoticness of emeralds, due to the difficulties and hard work behind the extraction process from the heart of our mountains.
